How this ladder is estimated
Your money is split equally across the rungs. Each rung's yield comes from the Treasury par yield curve, with straight-line interpolation between published maturities (a 4-year rung uses a rate between the 3-year and 5-year yields). T-bills mature in a year or less and pay their interest at maturity. T-notes (2 to 10 years) and T-bonds (20 and 30 years) pay half the yield every six months; this tool totals those coupons without reinvesting them.
Actual auction rates differ from the curve, and bills are sold at a discount, so real dollar amounts will vary slightly. Treasury interest is subject to federal income tax but exempt from state and local income tax. You can buy at auction through TreasuryDirect or through a brokerage account.
When a rung matures, a common approach is to roll it into a new security at the long end of the ladder. That keeps the same spacing and lets you capture new rates. Compare with our compound interest calculator or read about bond ladders.
